The Metabolic Clinical Research Unit (MCRU) was opened in 2007 has part of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). The MCRU has 3 whole-room indirect calorimeters. In 2011, MEI replaced the gas sample preparation equipment and consolidated instrumentation for 3 calorimeters into a single instrument rack; built a portable gas blender for calibration and infusion simulations; consulted on installation of a medical air supply; and created automatic CO² control of ventilation flow. In 2013 MEI consolidated operation of all 3 calorimeters to CalRQ control software.
